Cool morning light falls through the misty Douro River, illuminating the faded azulejo tiles of a narrow Rua de Santa Catarina staircase. A vendor adjusts a metal gate handle on a closed bakery shutter, the brass worn smooth by decades of daily use. Inside the warm, dim interior visible through the gap, stacks of white ceramic saucers catch the weak window light, their surfaces gleaming against the shadowed counter. A pair of rubber slippers rests haphazardly on the wet stone step, hinting at the owner’s recent movement.
