Nubian Dome Murals in Kinshasa Train Terminal

by Theresa McKee

Indigo twilight washes the interior of a restored Kinshasa train terminal where a Nubian house dome rises from the wet floor. Colorful geometric murals in red, yellow, and blue cover the curved brickwork, their patterns sharp against the dim ambient glow. Reflected light from the drizzle shimmering on the polished concrete floor bounces up to illuminate the dome's base. Suspended from the high arched ceiling are giant, floating fruits and lanterns, their surfaces gleaming with moisture. The impossible spheres hang at eye level, casting soft shadows on the vibrant walls. Water droplets rest on the geometric lines, showing the texture of the painted bricks against the surreal, fruit-filled sky. at the edge shows a single large orange fruit resting on a puddle, mirroring the one above.
