Nowruz Table in Taunggyi Temple Twilight

by Hayden Levine

Indigo twilight washes the stone courtyard of a Taunggyi temple, where low-hanging wet-season clouds press heavy against the eaves. A low wooden table sits centered on weathered flagstones, holding the seven distinct items of a Nowruz spread: polished copper bowls, fresh green sprouts, painted eggs, and woven fabrics. The damp air settles on the rough masonry, darkening the stone surfaces to a deep charcoal. Shadows stretch long across the uneven ground, merging with the fading natural light. Each object rests with deliberate placement against the vast, open sky, their vibrant colors standing out against the cool, muted tones of the ancient temple walls. One droplet of water rests on the rim of the nearest copper bowl, reflecting the last faint glow of the horizon.
