Northern Lights Over Snow Fences in Ontario Winter Night

by Frances Haynes

Violet and emerald ribbons of aurora borealis stretch across a pitch-black sky above a rural Ontario landscape. Heavy snow fences, constructed of woven mesh and wooden posts, stand in parallel lines, their surfaces coated in a thick layer of dry, powdery snow. Thin telegraph wires cut horizontally across the frame, creating a stark geometric grid against the fluid movement of the lights. The ground reflects the aurora's glow, producing a mirrored effect where the sky and earth appear to merge seamlessly. Cold, dry air is evident in the sharp definition of the snow crystals and the absence of fog. A faint, diffuse ground glow illuminates the base of the fences, against the deep shadows cast by the wooden posts. at the edge shows the reflection of a single green light band rippling across the icy surface of the snow drifts.
