Aurora Borealis Over Snow Fences Kiruna Night
by Javier Boyle
Vibrant green ribbons of the aurora borealis stretch across a dark sky above a landscape of deep winter in the endless summer light of Kiruna. Horizontal wooden snow fences run parallel to the ground, their weathered planks coated in a layer of dry, crystalline snow. Thin telegraph wires cut across the frame, creating a delicate grid against the glowing curtains of light. A sweeping beam of artificial light, likely from a nearby lighthouse or station, illuminates the foreground with a warm, firelit intimacy, casting long shadows from the fence posts onto the packed snow. The air appears cold and dry, holding the sharp edges of the snow grains in high contrast to the soft, diffuse glow of the northern lights above. The lowest fence post stands firmly in the illuminated snow, anchoring the scene against the vast, dark expanse of the night sky.
