Night Cross-Stones on Kabul Fortress Wall

by Jorge Fleming

Deep indigo clouds roll above a wind-scoured stone wall near Kabul, where a sweeping beam of white light cuts through the darkness to illuminate an Armenian church facade. The beam reveals rough-hewn limestone blocks etched with intricate cross-stones, their edges sharp against the shadowed masonry. Wind has worn the surface texture into a matte gray, against the bright, cool light that highlights the carved religious symbols. The structure stands solid against the turbulent sky, its vertical lines emphasized by the harsh directional glow. Patches of pale frost rest on the lower stones, marking the turn of seasons. The light fades abruptly at the wall's edge, leaving the rest of the fortress in absolute blackness, while a jagged cloud formation drifts slowly across the illuminated upper archway.
