Nacreous Clouds Over Polar Station in Tibet

by Glen Poole

Iridescent bands of nacreous clouds float high above a cluster of low-slung buildings nestled in a Tibetan plateau landscape. Early spring thaw has turned the surrounding ground into a patchwork of melting snow and dark, wet earth. Thick mist rests on the valley floor, softening the edges of the station structures while reflected light from nearby meltwater pools creates a shimmering, silvery glow across the foreground. The station's red and white containers stand out against the pale, pearlescent hues of the cloud layer above. From a high vantage point, the composition emphasizes the vast, empty space between the small human settlement and the towering, colorful atmospheric formations that stretch endlessly across the horizon. A sharp line of blue ice at the water's edge anchors the bottom of the frame.
