Muralist Wiping Hands at Dawn in Hafizabad

by Israel Choi

Mist rests on the narrow street of Hafizabad as the first light of dawn bleeds into the sky. An open doorway frames a muralist standing at the threshold, sleeves stained with layers of dried paint and dust. The wind whips loose strands of hair across a face marked by fatigue. Morning mist diffuses the light, softening the sharp edges of the surrounding brickwork while leaving the dust on the fabric in high relief. Bold shadows stretch across the rough plaster of the wall, against the pale, cool gray of the early spring air. A smear of blue pigment remains on the back of a hand as it wipes against the forearm. The texture of the weathered doorframe is visible where the light catches the grain.
