Muralist Wiping Hands at Dawn Doorway in in the old quarter in Managua

Muralist Wiping Hands at Dawn Doorway

by Harper Patton

Soft, gray overcast light falls through heavy rain clouds, casting a flat, even glow on the weathered stucco of an old Managua doorway. A muralist stands at the threshold, sleeves rolled to the elbows, where thick layers of dried blue and ochre paint crust the fabric. Their hands are raised, palms rubbing together in a slow, deliberate motion to remove wet pigment. Dark rain clouds press low against the sky, matching the damp, slate tone of the street below. The rough texture of the crumbling wall contrasts with the smooth, wet sheen of fresh paint on the artist's skin. Dust motes hang suspended in the diffused air, settling on the collar of a faded gray shirt. One smear of cobalt paint marks the tip of a thumbnail.
