Copper Light on Mud-Clad Cattle Pen and Sorting Rails

Late autumn wind whips dry grass across a South Carolina ranch corral where copper-toned dusk light washes the wooden sorting rails. Mud splatters halfway up the vertical boards, marking the churned earth floor below where deep hoof prints intersect with wet patches. Heavy steel chains hang from the squeeze-gate mechanism, gleaming faintly against the darkening wood. White lot cards dangle from the rail, their surfaces stiff with moisture. The ground remains a textured map of recent activity, with wet clay clinging to the base of the posts. One shadow stretches long across the mud, ending at the rough edge of a board where water drips slowly.
