Moonlit Persian Loom in Maradi Hall in in a ceremonial hall in Maradi

Moonlit Persian Loom in Maradi Hall

by Helen Martin

Cold moonlight spills across the wooden frame of a Persian carpet loom standing alone in the center of a ceremonial hall in Maradi. The deep night sky outside casts a pale, blue-gray glow that highlights the intricate knots of red and indigo wool stretched taut on the warp. Humid air hangs heavy, condensing slightly on the dark floorboards and making the polished wood surfaces gleam with a wet sheen. Seasonal changes are visible in the way the light hits the bare corners of the room, leaving the vast space in shadow while the loom remains the only illuminated object. The texture of the wool fibers catches the faint light, creating sharp edges against the surrounding darkness. One shadow stretches long from the loom's leg across the damp floor.
