Night Weaver at Barranquilla Market Hall
by Billy Chang
Warm candlelight glows against the cool night air inside a spacious market hall in Barranquilla, illuminating a solitary weaver seated at a wooden loom. The weaver's hands move rhythmically among the threads, their face softened by the flickering firelight while shadows stretch long across the stone floor. A window in the background allows a sliver of pale moonlight to cut across the dusty air, highlighting floating particles and the texture of the woven fabric taking shape. The surrounding space is vast and empty, filled with negative space that isolates the figure against the dark architecture. Strips of fabric hang nearby, displaying intricate patterns in deep indigo and earth tones, while the cool season air remains still around the warm, intimate circle of the candle flame. The final beam of moonlight rests on the edge of the wooden loom frame.
