Mixing Mortar in Bologna
by Krystal Rice
Under the flat, diffuse light of an overcast midday, a narrow Bologna alleyway reveals a weathered stucco wall lined with rusted metal tool hooks holding various iron implements. A pair of hands, stained with clay, carefully maneuvers a wooden spoon through a shallow basin of wet mortar, ignoring the storage tin and brayer resting on the adjacent ledge. The scene is anchored by the deep red of a traditional arched doorway handle in the foreground, contrasting sharply with the pale, rain-dampened stone of the historic buildings further back. A sudden draft lifts the edge of a linen curtain hanging in a nearby window, casting a fleeting, rippling shadow across the worker's arm.
