Arranging Bread in Bologna

Low morning light spills across the ochre stucco of a narrow Bologna alley, catching the wet sheen of recent rain on the uneven stone paving. A local baker in a flour-dusted apron leans out from a darkened bakery doorway, arranging fresh, golden bread on a wooden counter that shows deep knife marks and flour dust. Beside the bread, a simple terracotta bowl holds a small pile of dark olives, its rough texture against the smooth, pale crusts. In the background, the arched porticoes stretch into the mist, their brick pillars standing silent and sturdy.
