Steel pipes run parallel to a frozen service road, their surfaces slick with melting rainwater under a gray winter sky. Two workers in heavy wool coats and leather boots stand beside a descending mine shaft elevator, their metal helmets glowing with bright headlamps that cut through the humid, misty air. Snow rests on the rusted railings of the lift cage, while frost lines the edges of the concrete platform. The tilted perspective of the frame emphasizes the vertical drop of the shaft against the horizontal pipes. Droplets of water bead along the cold metal of the helmet visors, reflecting the dull daylight. The workers grip the handrails, their breath invisible in the freezing air, as the cage begins its descent into the earth.
