Miller Loading Grain Sacks at Windmill Dawn
by Mia Walls
Misty gray light falls through a humid autumn morning in a Manitoba temple precinct, illuminating a miller hauling heavy burlap sacks onto a windmill's hoist chain. The ground glistens with recent rain, creating a perfect mirror that doubles the silhouette of the miller and the towering windmill structure. Lanterns line the perimeter of the stone courtyard, their warm glow diffused by the damp air and hanging mist. The rough texture of the burlap contrasts with the smooth, wet stone of the temple steps. Heavy chains hang vertically, straining under the weight of the sacks as they ascend. The reflection in the puddle at the base of the mill shows the inverted image of the lanterns, the miller's posture, and the darkening sky above. A final drop of water rolls from the edge of a sack, landing in the shallow pool with a visible ripple.
