Lighthouse Beam Cuts Night Fog Desert Escarpment in beneath a wind-cut desert escarpment near Durban

Lighthouse Beam Cuts Night Fog Desert Escarpment

by Eugene Hatch

Silvery winter light illuminates a massive stone escarpment rising from a dark, arid floor. One lighthouse beam slices horizontally through thick, low-hanging sea fog that rests on the base of the rock face. The light creates a sharp, glowing wedge against the deep indigo of the night sky. Rough, wind-sculpted textures on the cliff surface catch the edges of the beam, revealing layers of sedimentary rock in shades of grey and ochre. The fog diffuses the light, softening the transition between the solid stone and the empty air. Shadows stretch long and soft across the dry ground, while the beam's glow fades into the misty distance. A small, unlit observation window sits high on the tower, dark against the illuminated cloud bank.
