Lichen Fruiting Body on Winter Granite in Az Zubayr
by Rodney Stout
Soft, diffused dawn light falls through a gentle fall of snowflakes, illuminating a tiny lichen fruiting body clinging to weathered granite. The stone surface, rough and pitted from winter exposure, anchors the composition in the foreground while the background dissolves into a wide expanse of negative space. The lichen displays a textured, pale orange crust against the cool grey of the rock. Individual snowflakes rest on the stone and hover in the air, their white forms stark against the muted tones of the riverside landing in Az Zubayr. The cold, dead of winter atmosphere is visible in the frosty coating on the rock edges and the sparse, dormant vegetation in the distance. One flake settles on the edge of the lichen's rim, its delicate structure perfectly defined.
