Lichen Fruiting Body on Weathered Granite Near Al-Fashir

by Joanna Oliver

Pale orange lichen clusters cling tightly to the rough, gray surface of a weathered granite boulder. The stone texture is deeply pitted with erosion marks and fine cracks filled with dry dust. Low tungsten light spills through a nearby window, casting a warm, yellow glow that highlights the fuzzy edges of the fruiting bodies. Outside the frame, heavy overcast skies suggest the still hours before dawn, keeping the ambient light cool while the interior warmth creates a sharp contrast. The dry season is evident in the brittle appearance of the surrounding rock and the lack of moisture on the stone. A faint reflection of the orange lichen appears on a smooth, wet patch of granite near the base of the rock.
