Jewel-like Lichen on Basalt in Ndola Seed Pod

by Alma Hubbard

Pale noon light bounces off surrounding walls to flood a split seed pod resting on a dark basalt surface. The interior of the pod reveals a crust of lichen growing directly on the rough, volcanic rock. Tiny, gem-hued crystals of the organism stand out in sharp relief against the matte black stone. The texture shifts from the fibrous, papery edges of the dried pod to the hard, uneven grain of the basalt. Quiet shadows nestle in the deep crevices where the rock meets the seed casing. Minute green and grey patches cover the stone in a mosaic of organic growth. one drop of moisture rests on the rim of the split pod, catching the flat glare of the midday sun.
