Lhasa Viaduct Arches Spanning Autumn Valley
by Tony Carlson
Brutalist concrete arches and steel cables dominate the frame, rising from the valley floor under the flat, unforgiving glare of noon. The midday sun casts sharp, high-contrast shadows across the textured gray surfaces of the viaduct, highlighting the rough aggregate of the concrete and the taut lines of the suspension elements. Below, the valley floor displays patches of autumnal yellow and brown vegetation, stripped of summer green. A narrow river cuts through the canyon, its surface disturbed by wind ripples that catch the harsh light. Dust particles swirl visibly in the updrafts created by the wind whipping through the open spaces between the massive pillars. The sheer scale of the engineered structure dwarfs the natural landscape, creating a rigid geometric grid against the organic curves of the canyon walls. At the base of the nearest pillar, a small pile of loose gravel shifts slightly in the gust.
