Korean Potter Glazes Crane Vase in Az Zubayr Shrine
by Angie Garza
Low golden light from a setting sun slices through heavy overcast skies, tracing long, sharp shadows across a shrine floor lined with paper lanterns. A Korean celadon potter sits in the foreground, hands coated in wet glaze, carefully applying a white slip to a tall vase featuring a raised crane motif. The early autumn air hangs still as the light catches the glossy curve of the ceramic against the rough, textured walls of the shrine. Layers of lanterns recede into the distance, their warm orange glow against the cool grey of the storm clouds visible through the open eaves. The potter's focused posture anchors the scene while the deepening twilight casts a charged, silent tension over the wet clay and flickering paper lights. one drop of glaze rests on the rim of the vase, catching the last ray of sun before the shadow swallows it.
