Farrier Inspecting Shoe in Maun Market Lane
by Kathy Foley
Crisp high-altitude light flattens the dust on a narrow market lane near Maun, casting sharp, short shadows beneath a farrier crouched over a workbench. The man, seen from behind, leans forward with intense focus, his hands manipulating a heavy iron horseshoe against the rough wood of the stall. Tools lie scattered on the ground: a heavy hammer with a worn handle, a pair of nippers, and a block of steel. The dry earth around the stall is cracked and pale, against the dark metal of the equipment. Dust motes hang motionless in the bright air, settling on the farrier's worn boots and the coarse fabric of his trousers. A stack of fresh horseshoes gleams dully in the harsh noon sun, their edges catching the light before the shadow of the stall falls across the work surface.
