Japanese Temple Gate in Monsoon Malabo Before Sunrise

by Daisy Whitehead

Deep shadows cloak the curved tile roof and heavy wooden gate standing in the temple courtyard. A thin rim of cool pre-dawn light traces the upper edges of the black tiles and the rounded eaves, separating the dark structure from the pale sky. Monsoon moisture hangs in the air, visible as a soft haze clinging to the ground and the textured stone pavement. The wide panoramic view reveals the gate's imposing scale against the empty, wet earth of the courtyard. Rain-slicked surfaces reflect the faint ambient glow, while the intricate joinery of the gate posts remains obscured in the gloom. at the edge is a single water droplet sliding slowly down the vertical grain of the dark wood.
