Autumn Torii Gate Amidst Summer Drizzle in Asakusa

Red lacquer pillars of a Shinto torii gate rise steeply from a wet stone floor inside a covered passageway in Asakusa. Overhead, a grid of skylights admits the dimming blue of evening while strings of warm white bulbs cast a soft glow on the dripping surfaces. Midsummer green leaves cluster thickly around the frame, their edges blurred by a fine, persistent drizzle that beads on the varnish. The low angle emphasizes the towering height of the structure against the gray sky. Water streams down the curved lintel in steady rivulets, pooling in the shallow depressions of the dark stone steps below. The red paint gleams intensely where the light hits the wet grain, against the deep shadows in the corners of the passageway.
