Jakarta Courthouse Staircase Before Dawn
by Rex Gaines
Stark fluorescent light floods the concrete floor of a jury assembly room located outside a Jakarta polling station entrance before dawn. Paper signs in bold Indonesian script and stacks of foam cups sit scattered across the ground. One landing exists where a staircase splits into two impossible paths: one flight ascends into the pale morning sky while another descends into the dark earth below, both originating from the same central platform. Broadcast cables snake across the foreground, partially obscuring the base of the structure. Paper notices flutter against the metal railing, casting sharp, geometric shadows that align perfectly with the dual gravity of the stairs. The light reflects off the wet pavement, highlighting the texture of the concrete steps leading upward and downward simultaneously.
