Accra Gallery Stair Hall Skylight Rain Night in inside a skylit passageway in Labadi, Accra

Accra Gallery Stair Hall Skylight Rain Night

by Mateo Schwartz

Distant street lamps spill amber light through a high skylight onto a concrete stair hall in Labadi, Accra. Rain-slicked surfaces reflect the warm glow against the cool grey of the monsoon night. Heavy, dramatic clouds obscure most of the sky above the glass, creating deep shadows that pool on the steps. Human scale emerges from the width of the handrails and the height of the doorways rather than from people. Water beads along the metal edges of the frame, dripping slowly onto the tiled floor below. The leading lines of the staircase ascend toward the dark opening, guiding the gaze upward into the dimness where a single wet patch glows faintly on the landing.
