Italian Brood Mares Under Clouds at Stockyard

Diffused light falls through low gray clouds hanging over a dusty Italian stockyard. Three brood mares stand along a weathered wooden fence, each wearing a dark fly mask and a leather halter. A white plastic salt tub sits near the center, flanked by a metal water trough and a second tub further down the line. The ground is dry and cracked, against the wet sheen on the horses' coats where a brief sun shower recently fell. Behind the animals, a concrete loading ramp rises steeply, its gray surface gleaming with moisture. Layers of fencing recede into the distance, where dry scrub and distant hills merge with the overcast sky. The practical weight of the infrastructure balances against the quiet stillness of the livestock. A droplet of water hangs from the edge of a fly mask, catching the soft light before falling.
