Skier Launches Off Kicker Near Harbor Quay
by Carl Baird
Copper-toned light washes over a steep, snow-packed slope carved with deep moguls, leading directly to a wooden harbor quay in Huacho. A freestyle skier hangs inverted mid-air, knees bent tight against a chest clad in dark winter gear. Rain streaks visibly through the air, catching the firelight warmth that glows from unseen sources along the quay's edge. The wet snow glistens under the low angle of the sun, reflecting the orange hue against the grey sky. Behind the athlete, corrugated metal roofs and weathered pilings define the coastal town's edge. The skier's shadow stretches sharply across the uneven snow, anchored by the heavy texture of the wet surface beneath. One droplet rests on the tip of a ski pole, suspended in the falling rain.
