Gruyere Wheel Turned in Tuscan Cave in in Tuscany

Gruyere Wheel Turned in Tuscan Cave

by Ariana Colon

Reflected light from a nearby water source bounces off the rough, waxed rind of a large Gruyere wheel, illuminating the curved surface with a soft, silver sheen. A silhouetted figure stands within the dark mouth of a stone cellar, hands gripping the massive cheese to rotate it slowly. The dry Tuscan season leaves the surrounding earth cracked and pale, against the deep shadows of the cave opening. Above, a perfectly clear sky casts a sharp, bright backlight that erases facial details into a solid black shape. The texture of the aged cheese skin appears thick and porous against the smooth, cool water reflection nearby. Dust motes hover in the beam of light entering the cave, settling on the stone floor where the wheel rests.
