Warm late afternoon light spills across the cluttered counter of a Kaohsiung herbal medicine shop, illuminating rows of brass mixing jugs and ceramic basins stained with mineral rings from years of steeping roots. In the mid-ground, a shopkeeper’s hands move quickly, grinding fresh basil leaves and dried herbs in a heavy stone mortar and pestle, the rhythmic motion blurring slightly with speed. Beside the active workspace, a stack of faded cassette tapes and a wire letter tray sit neglected, overshadowed by the sensory immediacy of the grinding.
