Crushing Herbs in Beirut

by Leonardo Kerr

First light after rain falls through the heavy, open shutters of a downtown Beirut café, casting long, sharp geometric shadows across a wet, checkered tile floor. A local vendor in a faded apron leans over a stainless steel counter, using a traditional mortar and pestle to crush fresh mint and sumac, the stone tool’s rough texture against the slick, rain-slicked surface. Outside, the street is a mirror of gray sky and distant minaret silhouettes, while inside, a glass carafe of amber tea sits near a stack of white ceramic cups, condensation beading on the cold glass.
