Chili Jars in Tainan

by Thomas Bowers

First light after rain washes the narrow alley in Tainan with a cool, diffused glow, reflecting off the wet asphalt and slick ceramic tiles of the shopfronts. A local shopkeeper in a faded yellow raincoat stands behind a glass counter, arranging rows of bright red chili paste jars that catch the ambient light. The scene is cluttered with lived-in details: a rusty hacksaw rests on a wooden workbench near the entrance, its teeth gleaming slightly, while water marks stain the peeling painted plaster of the adjacent wall. Above, a cluster of colorful kites hangs motionless from a clothesline, their synthetic fabrics vibrant against the gray sky.
