Midday Light on Herbs in Osaka
by Marley Patel
Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast Osaka midday, a narrow kitchen counter in a small, independent yakitori izakaya shows signs of active use. A pair of long metal tongs rests across the rim of a chipped white enamel pitcher, which holds a bundle of fresh mitsuba parsley. The wall behind is stained plaster, marked by the time and grease of the neighborhood, where the intricate shadow of a nearby bamboo fan falls in sharp, geometric relief. A worker’s hand, blurred by motion, reaches past the tools to adjust a skewer on the grill, the focus resting on the interplay between the bright green herb, the dull steel, and the textured, shadowed wall.
