Grilled Corn Ears at Dalian Temple Courtyard

by Tara Charles

Blackened kernels of corn stand upright on a charcoal grill, their charred surfaces glistening with moisture from the recent monsoon rain. Steam rises gently from the hot cobs against a backdrop of grey stone temple pillars. The ground beneath the vendor's stall is wet, reflecting the soft, diffused light of an overcast noon sky. Red plastic bowls sit nearby, stacked in neat rows beside a metal tray holding fresh husks. The damp air hangs heavy, visible as a thin haze between the foreground grill and the receding rows of temple archways. Dark soot stains the metal grate, against the bright yellow of uncooked kernels waiting their turn. The scene ends with a single cob resting on a wet stone step, its tip slightly burnt.
