Street Vendor Grilling Corn on Charcoal in Madurai
by Alex Kerr
Warm yellow light from overhead string bulbs spills across a narrow lane in a Madurai flea market, illuminating a vendor standing behind a small charcoal brazier. Thick black smoke rises from the glowing embers, curling into low-hanging grey clouds that hang just above the crowd. Several ears of corn, husks partially peeled, rest on a metal grate, their kernels glistening with moisture from the recent rain. The vendor's hands move quickly, turning the corn with tongs while water droplets bead on the dark metal surface of the brazier. Wooden crates stacked nearby hold plastic bags and spices, their edges soft in the dim glow. The wet cobblestones reflect the string lights, creating a patchwork of orange and white on the ground. One ear of corn, charred at the tip, sits in a paper cone waiting to be served.
