Graphite Cores Glued in Cedar Halves

by Dawson Molina

Dappled sunlight falls through early winter leaves, casting shifting patches of light and shadow across the factory floor. Heavy machinery dominates the space, its steel surfaces reflecting the dramatic, cloud-filled sky visible through high windows. Inside a processing unit, cylindrical graphite cores are being pressed into split cedar halves, creating a precise mechanical union. The wood grain of the cedar contrasts with the smooth, dark gray of the graphite. Metal guides and glue applicators hold the components in place with monumental utilitarian force. A long, continuous line of unfinished pencils moves along a conveyor belt, their unfinished tips waiting for the next stage of assembly. at the edge is a drop of amber glue clinging to the edge of a cedar wedge.
