Graphite Cores Glued in Cedar Halves

by Casey Peck

Cold moonlight spills across the interior of a grain elevator repurposed for pencil manufacturing. Rows of cedar halves stretch into the predawn darkness, their wood grain visible under the gray overcast sky filtering through high windows. Inside each split, a graphite core rests in a pool of wet adhesive, waiting to be pressed. The machinery lines up in perfect symmetry, creating a rigid corridor of industrial severity. Dust motes hang suspended in the still air, catching the faint light. The floor reflects the metallic sheen of the conveyor belts, while the rough texture of the cedar contrasts with the smooth, dark gray of the graphite. one drop of glue sits at the tip of a cedar half.
