Warm candlelight pools against the brick texture of a Little Italy alleyway, illuminating a pair of hands in blue nitrile gloves. The fingers hold a small metal blade, poised to trim a sediment core that has grown to the size of a cathedral pillar. This impossible geological column rises from the cobblestones, its layers of ancient earth stretching upward into the predawn darkness. The scale defies logic, yet the scientist's posture remains grounded and precise. One crack in the massive stone core catches the flickering flame, revealing a microscopic slice of sediment falling onto the wet pavement below.
