Giant Flamingo Wades Through Winter Bodega Street

by Anita Pollard

Cool blue twilight washes the Winnipeg sidewalk where a fruit bodega spills crates of red apples and yellow lemons onto the frozen ground. A massive flamingo, towering like a giraffe, stands knee-deep in the slush near the rain-darkened kiosk. Its bright pink feathers contrast sharply against the grey concrete and the deep shadows of the winter evening. Snow rests on the metal crates, while the bird’s long, curved neck stretches toward the overcast sky. Wet pavement reflects the faint glow of a neon sign above the store entrance. The scene is still, yet the sheer scale of the bird creates a jarring presence among the mundane grocery displays. A puddle at the flamingo’s foot mirrors the bird’s white and pink leg against the dark asphalt.
