Gecko in Dawn Shadow Near Bizerte Wall

by Steve Miles

Pale gray stone fills the frame from a low angle, rising steeply against a heavy, overcast sky. A small gecko clings motionless to the rough masonry, its skin matching the weathered texture of the dry season wall. Deep shadow swallows most of the lizard's body, while a thin rim of cool dawn light traces the curve of its spine and the edges of its toes. The stone surface shows cracks and subtle discoloration from age. The gecko remains perfectly still, eyes fixed forward, blending into the dark surface until the faint outline of its tail catches the fading twilight. one drop of dew rests on a crack in the mortar below.
