Cool morning light spills across the wet asphalt of a Chicago alleyway, reflecting the pale blue sky above. A red brick building dominates the left frame, its mortar lines stained dark by decades of rain and exhaust. Leaning against the base of the wall is a rusted garden rake, its wooden handle slick with condensation. Beside it, a pair of heavy-duty garden shears rests on a puddle, blades closed, reflecting the dull gray sky. A few zinnias, battered and drooping, cling to a planter box overflowing with dark, waterlogged soil.
