First Light on Balcony in Sydney

by Kate Corona

First light after rain in Sydney’s inner west reveals a narrow laneway where the sky is a pale, washed-out grey. A wet asphalt street reflects the muted tones of a weathered brick terrace house, its facade stained with vertical water marks on the painted plaster. On a small, tiled balcony above, a few potted succulents sit heavy with droplets, their fleshy leaves catching the diffuse glow. Below, a rusted fire escape ladder hangs against the brickwork, leading down to a sidewalk where a single park bench stands empty, slick with moisture.
