Frozen Windmill in Northwest Territories Twilight in in Northwest Territories

Frozen Windmill in Northwest Territories Twilight

by Heidi Lucas

Cool blue twilight washes over a flat, snow-covered expanse in the Northwest Territories during the polar night. A solitary windmill stands rigid in the foreground, its large wooden sails encased in thick layers of ice that catch the dim ambient light. Heavy, gray overcast clouds press low against the horizon, blending seamlessly with the white ground. Faint tracks in the snow create leading lines that guide toward the structure. The metal framework of the tower appears dark and cold against the pale sky. A small patch of rusted orange paint peeks through the frost near the base of the central hub, providing the only warm tone in the monochromatic scene. The ice on the blades reflects the fading light with a sharp, glassy edge.
