Frozen Falling Dust in Lalitpur Chapel

by Cruz Holcomb

North light slices through a stained glass window, painting the carved wooden church door in bands of deep amber and cool blue. The door stands in perfect symmetry, its intricate Nordic carvings catching the warm interior shadows of early autumn. Suspended in the air before the wood are dozens of dust motes and tiny wood shavings, frozen perfectly mid-fall as if time has halted. These particles hang motionless, creating a rigid texture against the soft glow of the stained glass. The floor reflects the suspended debris, anchoring the impossible stillness to the physical room. One shard of light illuminates the grain of the wood where a dust particle hovers inches from the surface.
