Frost-Split Water Tower at Athens Canal Lock

by Valentina Mooney

Amber light washes the rusted steel skin of a derelict water tower standing beside a stone canal lock near Athens. The tank's upper rim has fractured open, revealing jagged edges where frost has crystallized along the split. Low sun angles stretch long shadows across the weathered concrete channel and the corroded metal framework. Heat shimmer distorts the air just above the sun-baked stone surfaces, creating a wavering haze that softens the distant horizon. Autumn leaves in shades of orange and brown rest on the surrounding dry embankments. The converging lines of the lock walls and the tower's support legs draw toward a vanishing point where the canal curves into the fading light. One shard of ice glints on the fractured metal edge, catching the last ray of the day.
