Freediver Descending Rope in Mohammedia Monsoon Light

by Everett Perry

Soft gray light falls through low-hanging clouds above the choppy surface of the Atlantic near Mohammedia. A freediver in a dark wetsuit grips a vertical guide rope, their body angled slightly downward as they slip beneath the water. The sea appears a deep, muted blue, disturbed by the rhythmic motion of monsoon swells. White foam breaks gently around the diver's shoulders while the rope stretches from the dark water up toward the overcast sky. Bubbles rise in a thin column from the swimmer's mask, catching the diffused illumination. The diver's hand holds the rope firmly, fingers curled around the thick synthetic fiber against the cool, wet texture of the neoprene. A small piece of driftwood floats nearby on the gray surface.
