Flashlight Beam Across Flaked Paint and Broken Tiles in through a courtyard reclaimed by grasses near Varna

Flashlight Beam Across Flaked Paint and Broken Tiles

by George Perkins

Hard coastal glare floods the sunlit courtyard reclaimed by tall early spring grasses near Varna. A sudden sun shower leaves wet patches on the ground where broken tiles lie scattered among the green stalks. A focused beam from an urban exploration flashlight cuts through the bright afternoon light, illuminating a crumbling wall covered in layers of flaked paint. The white and grey flakes peel away from the rough masonry, revealing the dark substrate beneath. The light creates a sharp, circular pool of brightness against the muted, weathered textures of the ruin. At the edge of the beam, a shard of blue ceramic rests on a damp stone slab, catching the reflection of the overhead sky.
