Fish Crates in Busan

by Brody Kaur

Under the flat, diffused light of an overcast midday, a narrow service alley in Busan’s Jagalchi district reveals a stack of weathered blue plastic crates used for transporting fresh catch. Resting precariously atop the highest crate is a single, battered steel suitcase, its dented metal rim catching a dull, diffuse highlight that contrasts with the matte, wet surfaces around it. Beside it, a pair of heavy-duty rubber boots and a coiled length of yellow rope suggest a recent unloading. The ground is slick with seawater and fish scales, reflecting the grey sky and the corrugated iron roofs of the surrounding stalls.
