First Light on Pigeons in Beijing
A cluster of gray pigeons gathers on the wet, dark pavement of a Beijing courtyard during the first light after rain. Their feathers are slick and darkened by moisture, reflecting the pale, diffuse glow of the overcast morning sky. Nearby, a discarded plastic cup rests beside a patch of moss growing in the cracks of the stone slabs. Water droplets rest on the edges of their wings as they peck at scattered crumbs on the ground.
